Topic Talk: Event, Issue, or Other Topic of Interest

Topic Choice: Auditory Processing Disorder/Sensory Processing Disorder
List five facts that you already know about this topic:

  1. Someone can have this learning disability and it makes them unable to understand material in school.

  1. The student can hear everything fine but the process from the ears to the brain is interrupted.

  1. Loud noises can really affect a person with auditory processing disorder.

  1. Its also known as CAPD – Central Auditory Processing Disorder

  1. Kids with this do not necessarily understand the difference in two words that sounds a like.

Answer these questions about this person:

1. How did this topic impact the world?
This disability impacts the world because at least 5% of all children have this and it is very discouraging to their learning.

2. Why is there still interest in it today, or why will there continue to be interest in it?

There is still interest about this topic today because it has such a strong impact on students and people try to learn more about it to try and help these students with the disability.
3. Why are you interested in researching this topic?
I am interested in researching this topic because my boyfriend has this disability and I see how it affects him. He tries really hard in school because he wants to do his best, but he never seems to understand certain things and it really discourages him. I hope that through this research I will be able to understand more about this disorder and help him.4. How do you personally connect with this topic?
I do not personally connect with this topic, but my boyfriend has it and it is very frustrating for me to understand why he can’t understand certain material even after explaining it many times.
Resources
What resources do you think will be useful to you? Specific books? Series of books? Magazines? Periodicals? Interviews? Internet sites? Films? Other?
Specific books based on learning disorders, one-on-one talks with students who have this disorder, internet sites and interviews with people who have this disorder or people who have tried to help people with this disorder
Once you have completed worksheets for TWO topics, please answer these two questions; be prepared to discuss your answers in class:

1. Of your two topic choices, which one do you think you will find the most information about? Please explain.
I think that I will find the most information about Coldplay because they are such a world renowned band. Finding interviews, internet articles, and tapes from their concerts will be easy to find and it will be useful for the whole Multigenre project in general.
2. Of your two topic choices, which one do you really like the best? Please explain.
Of the two topics, I really like the Sensory/Auditory Processing Disorder the best. It may be hard to find a lot of information on it though. I feel like this choice will benefit me the most in the end and it will be the most interesting. It’s always interesting to me when I can learn more about a disability that I don’t have and use it to better understand other people who may have that disability.

My name is Annaliese Berkenstock. I am studying Early Childhood and Special Education. Growing up in a family with four other siblings has been the start for my love for little kids. I am a Blackbelt in Kenpo Karate. I played the piano for eight years and the flute for three. During high school I also played lacrosse. My summer consisted of working at my two jobs, Gearo's Restaurant and Giant, and traveling down the shore, Ocean City New Jersey. I live in a small town called Huntingdon Valley which is located right outside of Philly. Watching Philadelphia Flyers games and visiting the Wachovia Center to attend their games is one of my favorite things to do. I have been obsessed with the Flyers ever since I was younger. I learn very well in an environment where the teacher and students interact and the students are given one on one time with the teacher. I can't wait to meet all of the new people here at Bloomsburg. I don't mind reading for schoolwork, but its not my favorite. My least favorite thing to do in school is write essays. I already love Bloomsburg and I can't wait to see all of the opportunities that I experience throughout my four years here!

Before Bloomsburg, I lived in…Huntingdon Valley

At Bloomsburg, I want to major in…Early Childhood and Special Education

My favorite teachers were the ones who…got to know every student and was willing to do anything to help the students succeed.

But I didn’t like classes in which…the teachers were lazy and didn’t love teaching.

In this class, I’m most nervous about…writing essays.

In this class, I’m most excited about…the way that we interact through Wiki.

If there’s one thing you should know about me as a student, it’s…I learn in quiet settings and with dedicated teachers.

If there’s one thing you should know about me in general, it’s…I love my family. This explanation really made a lot of sense to me because as I was rating myself, I realized that each section had to do with a different type of characteristic. The ones which I scored the highest on were Musical (Style 5), Interpersonal (Style 6), and Intrapersoal (Style 7). Subjects which don't interest me, such as science and english were scored the least out of all of them. I love music and I have played two musical instruments so a lot of things concerning music interest me. The other two which I scored high on are about the way that I know myself and the way that I communicate with other people. I believe that these are my two strongpoints. Learning Styles Profile
