The topic I settled on is Taylor Swift. I decided to choose Taylor Swift as my topic because it is a project that I can have fun with. She is an artist that many teenagers can relate to because of the topics she writes her music about. Also, I would like to learn how she became famous and create genres that reflect her as a person. The audience I might design this topic for would be young adults/teenagers along with individuals trying to pursue a music career. The purpose of this project would be to inform my audience of how Taylor Swift became successful and to inform them about the person she is today. The sources I would use for this project are interviews from magazines that Taylor Swift shares personal information. I would also use internet sources along with books to help research background information about Taylor Swift. I am not sure exactly which genres I plan on using but there are quite a few that I am interested in; these include: diary, interview, letter, resume, advice column, memory, photo gallery/album, timeline, and CD cover/liner.

The first topic I am interested in pursuing is eating disorders. The purpose of this would be to inform individuals about the struggles that those who are affected by this disease go through. The purpose would also be to learn factual information about these diseases and to be able to recognize someone who is struggling with an eating disorder. My audience would be individuals my age so that we can help peers around us who are struggling with these diseases. The genres I would use are an informative essay, newspaper article, an obituary, a graph/chart, and a documentary film. The second topic I am interested in pursuing is Taylor Swift. The purpose of this would be to learn how Taylor Swift became famous and background information about her before she was famous. It would also be to learn of all her different accomplishments. My audience would be teenage individuals because that is Taylor Swift's target age group for her singing and the type of people who relate to her lifestyle stories. The genres I plan on using are an autobiography, diary, interview, resume, advice column, memory, collage, timeline, and CD cover/liner.

Once you have completed worksheets for TWO topics, please answer these two questions; be prepared to discuss your answers in class:
  1. Of your two topic choices, which one do you think you will find the most information about? Please explain.
I feel that information wise I will find the most information about eating disorders because it is something that affects a large variety of people. There is going to be a lot more statistics and factual information than there would be for Taylor Swift.

  1. Of your two topic choices, which one do you really like the best? Please explain.
Although I would find more information about eating disorders, I really like the Taylor Swift topic. Many generic papers are basic and I have researched eating disorders before so I would enjoy learning about something new such as Taylor Swift. Also, I feel like I would be able to do a lot of interesting genres with a topic like Taylor Swift. Talk: Event, Issue, or Other Topic of Interest

I think that magazines will be very useful in order to research Taylor Swift. For the teaching assignment the genre was informational. I was trying to teach Makena how to curl her hair and was giving instructions as to how she can complete the task. The audience for this task was Makena, because I was instructing her on how to curl her hair, and my roommate Kayla, because she was watching me teach Makena. The purpose in this assignment was to be able to teach Makena how to curl her hair with a straightener because she could not figure out how to do it herself. For the healthy meal teaching assignment the genre was competitive. We were competing against different groups to present our information in hopes of having the healthiest meal. Our audience was our classmates as were trying to win them over to vote for our group as the best presentation. Mr. Sherry was also our audience because we wanted to show him we researched our meal and figured out why it was so healthy. Finally, the purpose of this assignment was to create a healthy meal that costs under five dollars for two to three different individuals.

For this assignment, I decided to teach my friend Makena how to curl her hair with a straightener. In my opinion the learning styles that seemed to appeal to this lesson were Linguistic, Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, and Intrapersonal Intelligences. These were the leaning styles that I felt would be best in teaching Makena because it allowed her to learn by listening to what I was saying, watching a video, practicing on my hair, and finally practicing on her own hair. First, I found a video on YouTube that I thought was helpful and would show Makena someone doing their hair. I felt that she would be able to pick it up while watching someone else right in front of her. This technique didn’t seem to work and it caused her to become frustrated because she still wasn't able to complete the task. Next, I talked Makena through the steps of curling her hair while I showed her on my own hair. This appealed more to her and she was able to get a basic understanding of how it was done. I then decided it was best if Makena tried doing her own hair while I talked her through the steps along. This learning style was definitely best for Makena. Finally, Intrapersonal Intelligence was used because Makena repeated the steps to herself and was able to curl her hair on her own without any instruction or demonstration. Makena was able to work her way through the steps and ended up curling all of her hair by herself. In terms of multiple intelligences, Makena struggled with the Spatial Intelligence. She had a hard time being able to pick up the steps while watching someone perform the task; this hindered my efforts of teaching her because it required me to give detailed instructions in order to help her learn. Makena’s strengths were definitely Bodily-Kinesthetic and Intrapersonal Intelligence. She was able to do the task hands-on and work her way through the different steps by instructing herself along the way. This helped my efforts because it was easier to instruct her through the process because she was practicing on her hair and getting hands on. I had evidence that Makena learned the lesson when she had curled all of her hair. In form of multiple intelligences, this evidence took the form of bodily-kinesthetic.

After taking the different types of test and comparing the numbers I received to the different style descriptions I would definitely agree with the results. My lowest score was on Learning Style # 8 which was Naturalist. Naturalist involved nature and being in touch with the environment around you. I am not very involved with nature and it is not something that catches my attention so I am not surprised that this is the lowest score I received. I was surprised that I was in the middle for Learning Style # 5 which is Musical. I am not very involved with music and the only thing I ever do involving music is listening to the radio or my Ipod. I did not think I would receive as high of a score as I did for this learning style. I scored highest on Learning Style # 6 which is Interpersonal. I agree with this score because I like to socialize with others and take the initiative to be a leader in a group setting. Overall, I feel that these tests were able to prove my strongest and weakest learning styles.

But I didn’t like classes in which the teacher only used lectures and powerpoints

In this class, I’m most nervous about combining seven different genres to make one paper

In this class, I’m most excited about writing a paper in different genres
