Heyy! My name is Melinda Shock. My major is American Sign Language Interpretation. I hate lectures that make just about everyone fall asleep. I love class discussions and working in groups because then it's a lot easier to get to know your classmates and it makes class a lot more interesting. I hate writing and it's definitely one of my weakest points. I love sign language, reading, dancing, and hanging out with friends.

Teaching Experience

I taught a friend how to finger spell their name in sign language. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I thought it would only involve kinesthetic intelligence by showing her with my own hands how to do but I quickly found out I had to also explain verbally, using Interpersonal intelligence, how to do some of the letters, sometimes even just having to fix her hand myself into the right shape.

-To what learning styles does the lesson you were trying to teach seem to appeal (for instance, shooting baskets might appeal most to Kinesthetic and Interpersonal intelligences)?

Kinesthetic and Interpersonal

--In terms of multiple intelligences, what were the strengths and struggles of the person you were trying to teach? How did this help or hinder your efforts?

The girl I was teaching did better with learning through interpersonal intelligence like when I explained how to shape her hands. This hindered my efforts because it was easier for me to just show her rather than to explain.

--What evidence did you have that the person had learned the lesson? In terms of multiple intelligences, what form(s) did that evidence take?

I knew that my friend had learned the lesson when she randomly came up to me a few hours later and finger spelled her name on her own. It was a little bit shaky though so I showed her a couple of the letters again and this time it was easier for her to understand just by me showing her using kinesthetic intelligence.

Revisiting Teaching Experience and Food Challenge

How did genre, audience, and purpose figure in those processes?

For the teaching experience the audience was my friend who I was teaching the sign language to. The genre was a lesson and the purpose was to enable my friend to be able to finger spell her name in sign language.

For the food challenge the audience was our Comp 1 class. The genre was a competition and the purpose was to persuade the class into thinking that our meal for 5 dollars or less was the healthiest out of all the groups' meal ideas.

2. Girl soldiers are often raped.

4. Very few people even know what a child soldier is let alone aware of child soldiers in Africa and the amount of them.

This has corrupted and ruined way too many children’s lives in our world.

These exorbitant amounts of children are being forced into violence and sexual intercourse at very young ages and hardly anything is being done about it.




3. Why are you interested in researching this topic?
I am very passionate about children, their well-being and issues like these that are so astronomical and horrendous yet very little is done to help or eradicate the situations.

I was the president of the O Ambassadors club in my high school and our focus was raising money and awareness for third world countries and all of their problems such as poverty, child soldiers, and sex trafficking.

I have decided to make my multigenre project topic "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days". Many girls I know have absolutely no problem picking up guys but being able to hold on to them and keep a serious relationship with them is a whole different story. I will be researching tips on how to keep a guy in relationship advice books, in credited magazine articles, and by interviewing many different guys to get their opionions. My genres will be a timeline, recipe, magazine article, advice column, collage, digital story, map with legend, interview, and graph/ chart.

A Relationship

A relationship between two people can have very different meanings. In some relationships such as two lovers, they can also be best friends because they share good communication. A relationship between a parent and child has a special bond because they share love, and affection for each other. However, there are times when a relationship can go bad because there is no understanding, lack of communication, and a feeling of distance in the relationship. In comparing and contrasting the two essays “Arm Wrestling with my Father” and “Shooting Dad” each have a lot in common, communicate through actions, and gain understanding for one another.First, by comparing the two essays they have a lot in common, like each essay is about a child and their relationship with their father. However, they differ because Manning’s essay is about a relationship between father and son, and Vowell’s is about the relationship between father and daughter. In each essay the main child focused upon gives notion to a sibling in the story whether, it be a sister or a brother.

Status of my Project- I'm not as far along in my project as I'd like to be. I'm pleased with what I've done so far but I need to pick up the pace and make a final decision of how I'm going to package everything together for the final presentation. I really want to make a video, but I'm not sure how to go about that or if I have enough time to do so.
