How did genre, audience, and purpose figure in those processes?

The audience of my healthy meal research and presentation project was Dr. Sherry and my classmates. My group and I presented to the class and Dr. Sherry what we believed was the healthiest meal to make for two to three people for fewer than five dollars. The purpose of presenting my presentation to my audience was to visually display and to inform them what the healthiest meal is that can be made for fewer than five dollars that will serve two to three people. My purpose also was to persuade my audience that my healthy meal was the best choice to make; I was also trying to persuade my audience to vote for my healthy meal and make them believe that my healthy meal was the best choice. The genre of the meal presentation was visual; my group and I presented our healthy meal on Microsoft PowerPoint. We used fancy texts, colors, and designs in our presentation. If we used plain, boring texts and used no color our presentation would appear to be dull and not exciting; people would have lost interest. We also included a lot of pictures of our meal, a lemon past dish, to show people the detail and to show how delicious our meal looked.

The audience of my teaching attempt was my younger cousin because she was the person I chose to teach something to; I taught my cousin how to tie her shoes. The purpose of my teaching attempt was to document my attempts of teaching my cousin how to tie her shoes using two different learning styles that we learned from taking the multiple intelligence survey. The genre of my teaching attempt was both visual and auditory. It was visual because I performed a mini skit for her showing how to tie shoes. My teaching attempt was also auditory because I taught her a song that had lyrics on how to tie her shoes; she had to listen to the song then remember the words to later sing it herself.

My audiences for the two projects were completely different. My first audience was my classmates and Dr. Sherry and my second audience was my younger cousin. These two audiences vary widely in ages and I had to take a different approach in talking to them. With my classmates and Dr. Sherry I could use a more advanced vocabulary, talk faster, and not have to explain every little detail. With my cousin being so young, I had to use small words that she could understand and say everything I was saying in the simplest form possible.
Courtney Chominski

For next class, document your attempts to teach someone something (perhaps you'll teach a sibling to shoot baskets or teach your parents how to use Facebook). Use your experience with multiple intelligences to answer the following questions; post your answers in the discussion forum on your personal page (hint: you can copy and paste these questions into a post):

I performed a skit for my cousin to teach her how to tie her shoes. The skit wasn’t very long but it got to the point and helped my cousin remember all the steps of tying her shoes correctly. In the beginning of the skit I focused on why it is important to tie your shoes; I untied my shoes and walked down the street, tripped on my shoe laces, and fell to the ground. I went on to explain that you will most likely trip and hurt yourself if you don’t tie your shoes. The next part of the skit consisted of me going over each step, very slow, of how to tie your shoe. I said each step before I preformed the action and repeated each step twice. For example I said, “Step 1, Cross your two strings and pull a string under the other.” The rest of the steps I used were: pull the strings very tight, Make a loop or oval with one of the strings but make sure to leave some string behind, take the other string and wrap it around the loop you made with the other string, tug it through the hole, now tie the loops together by crossing the loops and putting one under the other. After I was done my skit I tried to use a mathematical approach by labeling each step and asking her to repeat them. I would ask her to repeat step four and hoped that she would repeat it. However, she was unable to do this; I took a different approach and hope that she would be better at the Musical learning style. I taught her a song that I learned in kindergarten that goes to the tune of “Splish Splash I was Taking a Bath.” She loved the song and learned it in a very short amount of time. The song goes like this:

“Criss Cross and go under the bridge

Then you got to pull it tight.

Make a loop but keep a long tail

That is how to do it right

Then you take the other string

and you wrap it 'round the loop

Pull it through the hole

Now you got the scoop

Criss Cross and go under the bridge (this is where you tie the loops together)

Now you made a Double Knot.”

--To what learning styles does the lesson you were trying to teach seem to appeal (for instance, shooting baskets might appeal most to Kinesthetic and Interpersonal intelligences)?

This weekend I met up with my mom, my aunt, and my younger cousin to go out to lunch; I took the opportunity to teach my younger cousin Helena how to tie her shoes. The lesson I was trying to teach appeals mostly to Bodily-Kinesthetic and Musical learning styles.

--In terms of multiple intelligences, what were the strengths and struggles of the person you were trying to teach? How did this help or hinder your efforts?

Before I taught my cousin how to tie her shoes I Came up with two ways on how she could remember the steps. I was going to use the Bodily-Kinesthetic learning style and preform a skit for her on how to tie your shoes and I was going to use the logical/mathematical learning style to help her remember the steps in order. The strength of my cousin that I was trying to teach how to tie her shoes was that she was a good visual learner and the skit really helped her remember how to tie her shoes. I used the Bodily-Kinesthetic learning style to perform a skit for her on how to tie her shoes. My skit wasn’t very long and it got to the point; she was very easily able to grasp the idea of how to tie her shoes. The struggle of teaching my cousin how to tie her shoes was that she was not good with using numbers and order and the Logical/Mathematical learning style was not appropriate for her. There are nine steps to tying your shoes and each step she completed I asked her to say the step number. After she was done tying her shoe I asked her to say what step four was; she could not remember what the step was. I also asked her to repeat all ten steps to me in order and she was unable to do that too. Since my cousin was a visual learner this helped my efforts into teaching her because she was able to grasp the idea better and easier. However, since my cousin wasn’t good with order or numbers this slowed down my efforts of teaching her how to correctly tie her shoes. Looking on the bright side of things, my cousin’s lack of understanding the Logical/Mathematical learning style helped me remember a song that I was taught on how to correctly tie my shoes. I taught her the song and in a very short amount of time she was singing the song and tying her shoes. My cousin’s ability to understand musical techniques helped my efforts because it made the process a lot quicker and easier. The song helped her remember the steps and how to accurately tie her shoes; the Musical learning style along with the Bodily-Kinesthetic learn style best suited her.

--What evidence did you have that the person had learned the lesson? In terms of multiple intelligences, what form(s) did that evidence take?

The most obvious piece of evidence I have that my cousin learned my lesson I taught her is that she now knows how to tie her shoes. Before, my cousin only liked to where Velcro shoes because she didn’t know how to tie laces. After my lesson she asked her mom if she could take her shopping for shoes with laces. In terms of multiple intelligences, the form the evidence took was that she sang the song I taught her about tying shoes while she tied her own shoes and she performed a skit, similar to mine, showing her younger brother how to tie his shoes. The intelligences that were involved in my knowing that she’d learned were the Musical and Bodily-Kinesthetic.
I agree with you.
